Lines of Latitude & Longitude

Since 2018, I have done research together with 3 colleagues, Sofia Bjørkman, Helena Lethinen and Pernille Mouritzen, to investigate whether and how identity is expressed in crafts in the Nordic countries.

We are looking at crafts and the communal tale rooted in materials and aesthetics. The importance of aesthetics and materials in a construction of identity, sense of belonging and understanding of ourselves. Also, at how, our interconnected history is traceable today in material form.

How is our history traceable in material form? We are looking for the answers in traditional crafts, materials, landscapes etc. Things and materials carry within them a subtle story that moves us as human beings, be that as makers or users of these products. Often objects carry visual markers in the form of a direct narrative such as a decoration, at other times the story within is in the direct perception and association of a material to a landscape, folklore, myths, religion, social position, work, traditions, cultural institutions etc. We have done a lot of traveling to gather impressions. This is not at scientific projekt, it is intuitive and emotional. We, the four participants all come from a background in jewelry. Our mutual starting point of working with “the body” makes for a joint starting point of understanding the topics we experianced on our travels.

The Project is generously supported by Handmade, Nordisk Kulturfond og Statens værksteder for kunst og design.
